Third "great conflagration" struck April 26-27, 1902. Written on back: "This fire started in the Webb Hat Store. (See large hat.) Burned from where old Trust Co. alley was down to include Fowlers." Destroyed buildings on west side of Glen Street from Exchange Street to Fowler Alley at 150 Glen. Wilson & Root Co., Times Counting Room & Budd Bros., Grand Union Tea Co., Webb Bros., Eagle Clothing Co., S.T. Quinn & Co., which also housed Fowler's Shirt & Collar Co. work rooms in their upper floors burned down in this fire. Fowler, which employed 800, closed down after the fire. |
