Title Wedding Dress

Object Name Gown, Wedding
Description Two-piece dress of bluish-purple silk taffeta. The bodice is lined with brown cotton twill; has a jewel neckline and center front closure with nine black fabric/thread-covered buttons, as well as five hooks/eyes under bottom four buttons and at waist. Two boned darts at either side of closure; back lining (but not silk) is darted as well. Neckline, waist, and armscye are self-piped. Two-piece wide sleeve, trimmed at wrist with bands of taffeta that are bound with bias-cut black silk satin, double-box-pleated at intervals, with the top of the band folded down over pleats. (Binding sewn on by machine.) White china silk strip box-pleated inside end of sleeve.

Violet taffeta belt with peplum, both lined with glazed brown cotton. Peplum with bifurcated tail is trimmed along edges with sleeve trim, which is also at center back of belt. No fastenings.

Unlined overskirt of taffeta, gauged at center back. Glazed cotton incorporated into gauging to give it body. Bottom trimmed with sleeve trim - here it is in better condition, clear that both sides of pleats folded to middle and sewn together. Faced with light buckram.

Gored skirt lined with glazed brown cotton and bound at hem with lilac wool tape. Gauged at center back to narrow taffeta waistband, slightly pleated around front.

The file has referred to a veil, slip, and the dress' original box. The veil has not been found after a thorough search, and may possibly have been thrown away because of its extremely poor condition. The box is missing. The slip, 1981.73.1d is actually an infant's christening gown.
